4th day - but who's counting

jim was feeling pretty tired this morning.  we woke up early.  i woke up at 5:00; it was light out!  i let jim sleep as long as i felt comfortable, but since we were camping in a 'day use only' state park, i thought it appropriate that we get out before the park opened.  as it was, a walker and a runner came by before we were gone.  we were on the road by 6:15.
we said goodby to the historic columbia river highway, but not before a few more incredible views.  the trail through the state park was a lovely 10 foot wide path, freshly paved, just for bicycles and pedestrians.  we transitioned to roadway, where i was able to have a pre-breakfast of cherries right off the trees.  then rowena point offered a view of a canyon leading to the columbia, and then the gorge.  multiple switch backs with sheer drop offs brought us back down to the river.  nothing like coming around a hair pin and just looking out into space and the river beyond.  no time for picture taking.  jim ranked it in our top 3 decents. maurice, the decent kid, would have loved it.
breakfast in the dalles was unmemorable, and we moved on to the deschuttes river and maryhill, wa.  lunch among a bevy of trucks and tourists, before crossing to maryhill, wa. and a lovely little state park.  short day, about 40 mi., an

d a time for rest.
