Day 5 -

by the numbers:  up at 5:00 am.  the sun rises at 5:00.  that, and the irrigation sprinklers went off.  at first i thought it was just jim, but when it didn't stop....i had to get up and move my bike.   let jim sleep till 5:30, but we were on the road just past 6:00.
first we climbed a 2.5 mile, 5%+ slope.  when we got to the top, the sign said "no gas next 80 miles."  that was not good.  gas we can live without, but its the water we usually find at gas station/convenience stores that keeps us alive.  30 miles later we run into brandon and brian.  brandon is from boston, brian from newport news.  both are heading to the west coast;  they met up a few days back and have been riding together since.  brandon appears to carrying three times what we are; brian has bike as old as mine.  jim noticed he was wearing sneakers and didn't have any kind of clips.  we talk for awhile, and the good news is there is a mom and pop mini-mart that serves breakfast 3 miles down the road.  bad news is there isn't anything else for another 50 mi.
after breakfast, we walk outside and meet two other cyclists pulling in.  one guy from new york, the other is a friend who just joined him for a week.  half  a mile out of town, two other cyclists pass us heading west and a women yells out asking if there is a restaurant up ahead.  so 4 pairs of cyclists meet at this mini-mart within an hour of each other.  we see no other riders the rest of the day.
did i mention that it's in the 90's, sunny without a cloud in the sky.  and there is no shade anywhere.  not a tree to be found.
total miles: +85.
